about

BIMHUIS Records presents BIM018: Hristo Goleminov - Ground Wire

Ground Wire is the fruit of a yearlong project aiming to draw from the aesthetics and compositional techniques of European 17th and 18th century classical music, in order to write new works for 8 improvisers.

The resulting music reflects on the historical material in subtle but important ways: ever-evolving melodies based on a small amount of material; free counterpoint as the source of horizontal/vertical relationships; long and intricate forms made up of a constant flow of small sections; fine lines between solo and group playing (with hints of ritornelli).

Improvisation, with as few instructions as possible, is used as a means of composition. Improvised parts work as open spaces between densely notated sections, embedded in the musical form as dynamic structural elements. Performers were free to add new layers to the notated material, resulting in something which lies between solos and independent lines. The goal is both to ‘interpret’ the music as it is written and to expand on it with a more democratic creative process.

In parallel to my historical research, I listened to a variety of musical traditions that I believe made their way, more or less evidently, into the compositions: the folk musics of Ireland, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia and the Balkans; the Hindustani and Carnatic classical traditions of India; Black American Music; improvised music; and twelve-tone serialism.

Ground Wire, and its preceding research, was part of the Startende Makers program by BIMHUIS Productions. I would like to express endless thanks to BIMHUIS for giving me the physical and mental space to spend many months reading, listening, and writing. Many thanks to Fonds Podiumkunsten for their financial support.
